AI Visibility for Lawyers

Before calling a lawyer, many people now describe their problem to an AI assistant: they've been dismissed, a landlord kept their deposit, a business partner stopped paying. The answer explains where they stand — and often suggests who could help. AI visibility shows whether your practice is the one suggested for the matters you handle, in the places you practise.

Five questions clients ask AI about legal help

Example client questions · two set in Dubai

  • employment lawyer in Dubai for an end-of-service gratuity dispute
  • lawyer for a commercial contract dispute in the DIFC
  • do I need a solicitor to contest a will in England?
  • tenant lawyer who handles deposit disputes in Berlin
  • immigration lawyer for a skilled worker visa refusal

Each question bundles a legal problem, a jurisdiction and an urgency. Lawyers who are visible tend to be the ones whose pages name all three in the way a worried client would.

Where AI looks when the question is legal

Open the cited links on your own results to see your local mix. For legal questions they usually come from:

  • legal directories and peer rankings, which AI treats as a shortlist of practitioners;
  • bar associations, law societies and regulators, often suggested as the safe way to find someone;
  • law firm explainer pages that answer the underlying question in plain language;
  • client review platforms and map listings;
  • government and court information pages for procedure, deadlines and fees.

Mention vs citation for a law practice

A mention means the answer names your practice as someone to contact. A citation means one of your pages is linked as the source of the legal explanation. For lawyers the two often come apart: a clear article on gratuity calculation can be cited in an answer that then recommends a different firm — or no firm at all, just a directory.

Both are worth having. A citation shows your explanation is trusted; a mention is what produces the enquiry. Track which one you get for each matter type.

Six steps for lawyers

  1. Give each matter type its own page — not one "Litigation" page for everything — and say which courts and jurisdictions you work in.
  2. Answer the first question a client has on that page: what happens next, typical timelines, what to bring to a first meeting.
  3. Explain how you charge — fixed fee, hourly or other arrangements — even when you can't publish a figure.
  4. Keep lawyer profiles complete: admissions, languages spoken, matters handled.
  5. Check that your directory, regulator and map listings use the same practice name and areas as your site.
  6. Track one question per matter type and city, and re-check after you publish or change a page.

Advertising rules for lawyers differ by jurisdiction — for example around words like "specialist" and client testimonials. Check your regulator's rules before rewriting how you describe the practice.

How YourAIRank tracks a law practice

The free AI visibility checker reads your website, writes 3 client questions without your name in them and asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. Before the check starts you can edit the questions, for example to add your city or a matter type. Pro then tracks up to 10 questions every 7 days and records which firms, directories and sources appear instead of you. Pro is launching soon.

Clients still search Google for a lawyer, so the Google AI visibility checker shows whether an AI answer appears above those results and who it names.

Frequently asked questions

Will an AI assistant actually recommend a lawyer?

+

For general legal questions it often explains the law and points to a directory or regulator. For specific matter-plus-city questions it names practices more often. Which pattern your questions trigger is exactly what tracking shows.

Should we track legal explainer questions or only "lawyer in [city]"?

+

Both. Explainer questions show whether your pages are cited; lawyer-in-city questions show whether you're recommended.

Can AI answers get our practice areas wrong?

+

Yes, usually because an old listing or profile says something different from your site. Find the cited source and correct it — see how to correct wrong information in ChatGPT.

Are other professional services covered?

+

Yes — see the pages for marketing agencies and local businesses.
