How to Get Cited by ChatGPT

By YourAIRank Team · Published

Short answer

ChatGPT cites pages it retrieves with web search and actually uses to write the answer. To be cited: let OAI-SearchBot crawl your site, make your pages findable for the question, put a clear, self-contained answer high on the page, back it with specifics or original data, and keep it current. Being cited is about your pages as sources — it's different from your brand being recommended.

A citation is not a recommendation

A citation is a link ChatGPT attaches to part of its answer — evidence for what it wrote. Your page can be cited in an answer that recommends your competitors, and your brand can be recommended in an answer that cites none of your pages. This guide covers citations. For being named and recommended, see how to rank in ChatGPT.

How a page becomes a ChatGPT citation

  1. Crawlable — ChatGPT's search crawler must be allowed to fetch the page.
  2. Retrieved — the page must be found when ChatGPT searches for the question.
  3. Used — the page must contain something worth quoting or summarising for that answer.

Fail any of the three and the page won't be cited, however good it is.

1. Let the right crawler in

OpenAI uses OAI-SearchBot to surface sites in ChatGPT search. If robots.txt blocks it — directly, or through a broad * rule — your pages can't be retrieved for citations. GPTBot is a separate crawler; blocking it doesn't block OAI-SearchBot.

Check in seconds with the robots.txt AI checker. Also make sure your main content is in the HTML itself, not built only with JavaScript — the AI readiness checker flags pages with little text before scripts run.

2. Be findable for the question

ChatGPT turns a question into web searches. Pages that match those searches well — a clear title, a heading that mirrors the question, the specific terms and location — are more likely to be retrieved. One page per topic beats one page that covers everything vaguely.

3. Write answer-ready content

Pages get cited for the part that answers the question. Make that part easy to lift:

  • Answer the core question in the first paragraph, in two or three plain sentences.
  • Use headings that match follow-up questions, each followed by a direct answer.
  • Prefer specifics — prices, ranges, steps, requirements, dates — over general claims.
  • Keep facts current, and show when the page was last updated.

Answer-ready opening (fictional clinic)

  • How much does teeth whitening cost in Dubai?
  • At our clinic, in-office whitening costs AED 1,200–1,800 per session;
  • take-home kits cost AED 900. Prices last checked: October 2026.

4. Be a source worth citing

Given a choice, an answer leans on sources that add something: original data, first-hand experience, clear explanations, accurate local information. Pages that only repeat what ten other pages say have little reason to be the one cited.

  • Publish original data you genuinely have (your own prices, response times, survey results).
  • Explain things you know from practice — procedures, requirements, common mistakes.
  • Name the author or team and keep contact details visible.

Measure whether you're cited

Track the questions where you want to be a source and record which pages ChatGPT cites. YourAIRank stores the links attached to each answer separately from pages the search only looked at, and marks which ones are your own site — so you can see when your pages start appearing. Start with the free AI visibility checker or set up ongoing tracking with the ChatGPT rank tracker.

Frequently asked questions

If I block GPTBot, can ChatGPT still cite me?

+

Yes, as long as OAI-SearchBot is allowed. They are separate crawlers with separate robots.txt rules.

Does llms.txt make ChatGPT cite me?

+

There's no evidence it does on its own. Crawl access, findability and answer-ready content matter far more. The llms.txt generator is there if you want one anyway.

Why is a competitor's page cited instead of mine?

+

Usually because it matches the question more directly, answers it earlier and more specifically, or ranks for the searches ChatGPT runs. Compare the cited page with yours section by section.
