How to Track ChatGPT Referral Traffic
By YourAIRank Team · Published
Short answer
Clicks from ChatGPT usually arrive with chatgpt.com as the referrer, and links in ChatGPT search answers often carry utm_source=chatgpt.com. In GA4, filter the session source for chatgpt.com or build a custom channel group for AI assistants. Some visits arrive without any referrer and are counted as direct. Referral traffic only counts people who clicked — mentions and citations, measured in the answers themselves, show the visibility that never produces a click.
Referrals, mentions and citations measure different things
| Measure | Where you see it | What it tells you | Blind spot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Referral traffic | Your analytics | People who clicked from ChatGPT to your site | Everyone who read about you and didn't click |
| Mentions | The answers | Whether ChatGPT names your business | Whether anyone acted on it |
| Citations | The answers | Whether your pages are linked as sources | Clicks — a citation isn't a visit |
A recommendation often leads to a later Google search for your name or a direct visit — not a click from ChatGPT. So referral numbers are a floor, not the full picture.
How ChatGPT visits show up
- Referrer — clicks from the web app usually pass chatgpt.com (older visits may show chat.openai.com).
- UTM parameter — links in ChatGPT search answers often include utm_source=chatgpt.com, which analytics tools read as the source.
- No referrer — some apps and privacy settings strip the referrer, so a share of ChatGPT visits lands in "direct".
Finding ChatGPT traffic in GA4
- Open Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition.
- Set the primary dimension to Session source / medium.
- Search the table for chatgpt to see sessions, engagement and conversions from ChatGPT.
- Add Landing page as a secondary dimension to see which pages people arrive on.
To group AI assistants together, create a custom channel group with a channel whose source matches a regular expression such as:
Example source pattern for an "AI assistants" channel
- chatgpt\.com|chat\.openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|claude\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com
Place the channel above "Referral" so these sessions aren't counted twice. Check the sources in your own data and adjust the list — new assistants appear regularly.
Other analytics tools and server logs
Most analytics tools show the referrer domain and UTM parameters, so the same filter works. Server logs record the referrer header for every request — useful if you don't run client-side analytics. Don't confuse these human visits with crawler visits: OpenAI's crawlers use their own user agents.
What to do with referral data
- Landing pages with ChatGPT traffic are pages ChatGPT links — protect and keep them current.
- Engagement and conversion rates show whether those visitors are qualified.
- Trends over months show whether your AI visibility is turning into visits.
Connecting answers and traffic
Analytics never receives the question a visitor asked ChatGPT. To know which questions you're named and cited for, measure the answers: a ChatGPT citation tracker records which of your pages are linked, and the ChatGPT rank tracker records mentions and recommendations. YourAIRank measures the answers; your analytics measures the clicks. Read them side by side.
Frequently asked questions
Why is ChatGPT traffic so small compared with our mentions?
+
Many people get what they need from the answer, or search your name later instead of clicking. That visibility is real but shows up as branded search or direct traffic.
Can I see which question led to a visit?
+
No. The question stays in ChatGPT; your analytics only sees the click. Track the questions separately.
Does Perplexity traffic work the same way?
+
Perplexity visits usually show perplexity.ai as the referrer. How the two assistants differ beyond that is covered in Perplexity vs ChatGPT visibility.
