Perplexity SEO: How to Earn Citations and Mentions

By YourAIRank Team · Published

Short answer

Perplexity builds each answer from a handful of web sources it cites with numbered references. Perplexity SEO means becoming one of those sources and being named in the answer: let PerplexityBot crawl your site, publish pages that answer specific questions with specifics, keep them current, and be present on the sources Perplexity already cites for your topic. Then check which sources it actually uses.

How Perplexity builds an answer

Perplexity runs a web search for the question, reads the results, and writes a short answer with numbered references pointing to specific sources. Compared with ChatGPT, the sources are front and centre — a reader sees exactly which pages the answer came from.

That has a practical consequence: in Perplexity, being a cited source is often the first step to being named. If the sources Perplexity trusts for your topic don't mention you, it's unlikely to recommend you.

1. Let PerplexityBot in

Perplexity's crawler is PerplexityBot. If robots.txt blocks it — or blocks everything under * without a specific allow — Perplexity has a harder time reading your pages. Check it with the robots.txt AI checker, and make sure your key content is in the HTML rather than loaded only by JavaScript.

2. Write pages Perplexity can cite

Each numbered reference supports a specific statement. Pages that make clear, specific, checkable statements are easier to cite than pages full of general claims.

  • Answer one question per page or section, in the first lines.
  • Use concrete facts: prices, specifications, steps, dates, locations.
  • Show when the page was last updated, and keep it current.
  • Structure with headings that match how people phrase the question.

3. Be present where Perplexity already looks

For most questions Perplexity returns to the same kinds of sources: comparison and "best of" articles, review sites, directories, documentation and community discussions. The fastest route to being named is often to be accurately represented on the sources it already cites — not to out-write them.

From our own checks: in October 2026 we asked Perplexity three questions about AI visibility tools. Its answers cited 3–5 domains each, mostly comparison articles and vendor blogs, and it searched far fewer pages than ChatGPT did for the same questions. That's a tiny sample — check the sources for your own questions.

4. Keep it current

Because Perplexity searches live, outdated pages can be cited with outdated facts — or passed over for fresher ones. Review the pages that matter for your key questions regularly, and update facts like pricing, availability and opening hours first.

5. Measure sources, not just mentions

For Perplexity, track two things per question: whether your brand is named, and which sources are cited — including whether any of them are yours. A rising share of your own pages among the citations is often an early signal before your brand starts being recommended.

That's what the Perplexity rank tracker records. For a first look, use the free AI visibility checker; for the concept in general, read AI citations, explained.

Frequently asked questions

Is Perplexity SEO different from ChatGPT SEO?

+

The foundations are shared. The emphasis differs: Perplexity puts its sources in plain view, so becoming a cited source matters even more. See ChatGPT SEO for the ChatGPT side.

Does blocking PerplexityBot remove me from Perplexity?

+

It makes it much harder for Perplexity to read and cite your pages. If you want to appear as a source, allow it.

Can my site be cited without my brand being recommended?

+

Yes, and the reverse too. Track both separately so you know which one you're improving.
