Why Isn't My Business Showing in ChatGPT?
By YourAIRank Team · Published
Short answer
Usually one of a few reasons: you're testing with a question customers wouldn't ask, ChatGPT can't crawl or understand your site, your site doesn't say plainly what you do and where, too few independent sources mention you, or competitors simply match the question better. Diagnose before you fix anything: ask a few real customer questions, see who is named instead and which sources are cited, then work through the causes below in order.
First: make sure you're testing fairly
- Ask the way a customer would, without your brand name, and include the location if it matters.
- Use a temporary chat so your history doesn't skew the answer.
- Ask each question more than once — one missing answer isn't a pattern.
The ChatGPT visibility checker does this for 3 questions from your website and shows who is named instead.
1. OpenAI's search crawler can't reach your site
If OAI-SearchBot is blocked by robots.txt or a firewall, ChatGPT search can't use your pages. Check with the robots.txt AI checker, then confirm in your logs — see is ChatGPT crawling my website?.
2. Your site doesn't say plainly what you do
Taglines like "solutions that move you forward" give ChatGPT nothing to match. Your homepage should say in one sentence what you offer, for whom and where — the words a customer would use, not internal jargon.
3. No page matches the question
If customers ask about "emergency boiler repair" and you only have a general "Services" page, a competitor with a dedicated page is easier to find and cite. Give each important service, product or location its own page that answers the question directly.
4. Few independent sources mention you
ChatGPT gives weight to what others say. Businesses that appear on the lists, review platforms, directories and articles cited for a question get named more often. Look at the sources cited when a competitor is named — that's your list of gaps. More in digital PR for AI search.
5. Your information is inconsistent
Different names, addresses or phone numbers across your site and listings make it harder to connect them to one business. Use the same name and details everywhere.
6. Competitors have stronger evidence for the question
Sometimes you're visible, just not first choice. Competitors with more reviews, a clearer specialism or more specific content win the recommendation. Read how ChatGPT describes them: it tells you what it values for that question. A ChatGPT competitor tracking view shows who wins which questions.
7. The business or website is new
New businesses aren't in the model's training data, and new pages need time to be crawled and referenced. Search-based answers can pick you up sooner than training-based ones, which is another reason to keep your pages crawlable and specific.
8. ChatGPT answered without searching
If the answer shows no sources, it came from the model's knowledge alone, which favours long-established, widely mentioned brands. You can't force a search for other people, but you can strengthen how widely you're described. How ChatGPT search works explains both layers.
A diagnosis order that saves time
- Test fairly and record who's named and what's cited.
- Fix crawler access.
- Fix clarity and missing pages.
- Close the gaps in independent sources.
- Re-check the same questions after each change.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to start appearing?
+
There's no fixed timeline. Crawl and page fixes can show up in search-based answers within weeks; building independent mentions takes longer. Re-check the same questions to see when it changes.
We rank first on Google. Why not in ChatGPT?
+
Google rankings help, but ChatGPT also weighs what independent sources say and how directly your page answers the question. See ChatGPT vs Google AI visibility.
