How ChatGPT Search Works
By YourAIRank Team · Published
Short answer
ChatGPT answers from what its model learned in training and — when a question needs current or specific information — from a live web search. With search, it turns the question into one or more search queries, reads a selection of results, and writes an answer with links to the pages it used. Your visibility depends on both layers: what the model already associates with your brand, and whether your pages are found and used when it searches.
Two sources of knowledge
| Model knowledge | Web search | |
|---|---|---|
| Comes from | Training data, fixed at a cutoff date | Pages fetched while answering |
| Shows sources? | No | Yes — links attached to the answer |
| What helps you | Being widely and consistently described across the web over time | Crawlable pages that answer the question well |
When ChatGPT searches the web
ChatGPT decides per question whether a search is needed. Questions about recent events, prices, availability, local businesses or anything time-sensitive are likely to trigger one; general knowledge questions often aren't. Users can also ask for a search explicitly. If an answer shows source links, a search happened.
From a question to searches
A long conversational question rarely becomes a single search. ChatGPT rewrites it into shorter queries, sometimes several, and can add context such as a location.
Illustrative — how one question can become several searches
- Question: "I need a quiet co-working space in Lisbon with good wifi and phone booths"
- Searches: coworking Lisbon phone booths · quiet coworking Lisbon reviews · best coworking spaces Lisbon 2026
That's why one page per clear topic tends to do better than a page that mentions everything vaguely: it matches more of the searches.
Choosing sources and writing the answer
From the results, ChatGPT picks pages that answer the question and writes a summary across them, naming businesses and attaching links to the parts each source supports. OpenAI hasn't published a ranking formula for this step. What's observable: direct, specific, current pages get used; pages that bury the answer or say nothing concrete get skipped.
The crawler behind ChatGPT search
OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot is the crawler that makes pages available to ChatGPT search. If robots.txt or a firewall blocks it, your pages can't be used. How to check is in is ChatGPT crawling my website?.
Personalisation and memory
In the ChatGPT app, memory, custom instructions, earlier messages and approximate location can all shape the answer. Two people asking the same thing can see different businesses. That's one reason answers vary — covered in why ChatGPT gives different answers.
What this means for being found
- Let OAI-SearchBot crawl your site.
- Give each important topic a page that answers it clearly and early.
- Be described consistently by independent sources — that feeds both search results and future model knowledge.
- Measure real answers: which ones searched, who was named, which pages were cited. The ChatGPT citation tracker records the cited links.

Frequently asked questions
Does ChatGPT search use Google?
+
OpenAI says ChatGPT search draws on third-party search providers as well as its own crawler and content partners. It doesn't publish the full details, so treat being crawlable and well-indexed in general search as the baseline.
Is ChatGPT search the same as SearchGPT?
+
SearchGPT was the name of OpenAI's 2024 search prototype. Its features became ChatGPT search inside ChatGPT.
Can I see which searches ChatGPT ran?
+
Not reliably in the app. The answer's source links are the visible trace of what it used.
