AI Search Optimization

Short answer
AI search optimization is the work of making your business the one AI assistants name and your pages the ones they cite. It rests on five layers that apply to every platform: crawlers can reach your pages, your pages say plainly what you do, they answer real questions directly, independent sources back you up, and you measure the answers on each platform. Platform differences matter at the margins; the foundations are shared.
Two outcomes to optimise for
- Being named — your business appears in the answer, ideally as a recommendation.
- Being cited — your page is one of the linked sources the answer is built on.
They overlap but aren't the same, and each layer below helps them differently. The distinction is covered in AI citations.
Layer 1: Access
Each assistant has its own crawlers — OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, PerplexityBot for Perplexity, Claude-SearchBot for Claude, Googlebot for Google's AI features. Allow the ones you want in robots.txt, check that your firewall doesn't block them, and serve your main content in the HTML rather than only through JavaScript.

Layer 2: Clarity
- Say what you do, for whom and where in the first lines of your homepage — in the words customers use.
- Use one consistent business name, address and set of contact details everywhere.
- Give each service, product and location its own page.
- Add structured data that matches the visible page — see structured data for AI search.
Layer 3: Answer-ready pages
Assistants turn questions into searches and use the pages that answer them. For every question that brings you customers, have a page where a heading mirrors the question and the first paragraph answers it — with specifics: prices, ranges, steps, requirements, dates.
Layer 4: Independent evidence
Assistants rarely take a business's word for itself. Reviews, list articles, directories, industry publications and community discussions are what they use to decide who to name. Find the sources cited for your questions and work on being accurately represented there — the method is in digital PR for AI search.
Layer 5: Measurement
Optimising without measuring is guesswork. Fix a set of customer questions, ask them on each platform under the same conditions, and track who is named and what's cited over time. Start with the free AI visibility checker; keep a steady record with a tracker per platform.
Where the platforms differ
| Platform | What's distinctive | Deeper guide |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Searches only when needed; model knowledge matters | ChatGPT SEO |
| Perplexity | Searches for almost every answer; sources always shown | Perplexity SEO |
| Claude | Searches when needed; often research-style questions | Claude guide below |
| Google AI | Built on Google Search; AI Overviews and AI Mode differ | Google guides below |

Google specifics: how to appear in Google AI Overviews and how to rank in Google AI Mode.
What to avoid
- Keyword-stuffed pages written for bots — assistants summarise meaning, not keyword density.
- Mass-produced near-duplicate pages for every city or phrasing.
- Fake or incentivised reviews — they're illegal in many countries and a reputational risk.
- Text hidden from visitors but shown to crawlers.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI search optimization the same as GEO?
+
Yes — generative engine optimization (GEO), AI SEO and LLM optimization describe the same work. How it relates to classic SEO is in GEO vs SEO.
Do I need to stop doing SEO?
+
No. Most AI search foundations are SEO foundations; the differences are emphasis — direct answers, independent evidence and measuring answers, not just rankings.
Where should I start?
+
Measure first: run your customers' questions and see where you stand, then fix access, then clarity and missing pages.
