ChatGPT vs Google AI Visibility
By YourAIRank Team · Published
Short answer
Google's AI answers sit on top of Google Search: they draw on Google's index and appear for searches people were already making, so classic SEO strength carries over. ChatGPT is a separate assistant that answers from its model's knowledge and its own web searches, and is used for longer, more conversational questions. A business can rank well on Google and still be missing from ChatGPT — or the reverse — so check both for the same questions.
ChatGPT and Google's AI side by side
| ChatGPT | Google AI Overviews & AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|
| Answers from | Model knowledge + its own web search | Google's search index |
| Always searches? | No — decides per question | Yes — built on Search |
| How people ask | Conversations, long questions, tasks | Searches; longer questions in AI Mode |
| Crawler that matters | OAI-SearchBot | Googlebot |
| Shows sources | When it searched | Yes, linked sources |
| Local signals | Location from the user's context | Google's local data, location of the search |
Where the answer comes from
Google's AI answers are assembled from pages Google has indexed and ranks. If your SEO is strong, you start with an advantage. ChatGPT may answer without searching at all, from what its model learned — which favours brands that are widely and consistently described across the web, regardless of their Google rankings.
How people ask
Google users still mostly type searches. ChatGPT users describe a situation: "we're a team of six, mostly remote, need a CRM that works with Gmail and costs under €50 a month". Pages that address specific situations and constraints do well in both, but they matter more in ChatGPT.
How businesses get named
In both, the businesses named are the ones the sources support for the question. The difference is the source pool: Google's AI leans on what ranks in Google; ChatGPT's searches draw on other search providers and its own crawler, plus model knowledge. The result: overlapping, but not identical, shortlists.
What carries over from SEO — and what doesn't
- Carries over: crawlable, fast pages; clear titles and headings; content that answers the question; strong independent references.
- Google-specific: Google rankings, Search Console, snippet controls, Google's local data.
- ChatGPT-specific: OAI-SearchBot access, being described across sources beyond Google's top results, answers that hold up without a search.
The wider comparison is in GEO vs SEO.
Measuring both
Ask the same questions on both and compare: are you named in one and not the other? Are the cited sources the same? YourAIRank runs one set of questions across platforms, so the comparison is like for like. See the ChatGPT rank tracker, the Google AI Overview tracker and the Google AI Mode tracker.
Frequently asked questions
If I'm in Google's AI Overview, will ChatGPT name me too?
+
Often, but not reliably. They use different sources and ChatGPT may not search at all. Check both.
Which should a local business focus on first?
+
Usually Google, because local searches still start there — but check ChatGPT for your main questions, because the cost of being absent there is invisible in your analytics.
Is Gemini the same as Google's AI Overviews?
+
No. Gemini is Google's separate assistant app; AI Overviews and AI Mode are part of Google Search.
