What the AI visibility checker checks

The checker answers one question: when a potential customer asks AI search about what you offer, does your business show up? It doesn't guess or estimate. Every number in your report comes from 3 real answers generated for your site.

  • Brand mentions — whether each answer names your business, and how many times.
  • Mention type — recommended directly, mentioned without being recommended, only cited as a source, or not mentioned at all.
  • Position — when an answer lists several options, where your business appears (for example, 2nd of 5).
  • Competitors — the businesses the answers recommend instead, taken from the answer text. A brand and its own products are grouped together.
  • Cited sources — the links attached to each answer, kept separate from pages the search looked at but didn't cite.
  • Your own site — whether your website was one of the sources.

How the check works

  1. We read your public homepage to understand what you offer, who it's for and where you operate. If the site blocks automated visits, we try to identify the business with a web search instead.
  2. From that, we write 3 questions a real customer might ask. Your brand name is never in the questions — the point is to see whether AI brings you up on its own.
  3. Each question is asked once to ChatGPT with live web search, exactly as a customer would type it, with no instructions that could steer the answer.
  4. We analyse each answer: brand matching is deterministic (your name, aliases and domain), and competitor names are checked against the answer text so nothing is added that the AI didn't say.
  5. You get a report with the answers, mentions, competitors, sources and practical next steps. It usually takes about a minute.

Which AI platforms the free check uses

The free check runs on ChatGPT. Ongoing monitoring with Pro covers ChatGPT and Perplexity.

We use each platform's official API with its live web search. That is the closest programmatic equivalent of asking the app, but answers in the consumer apps can differ because of personalisation, memory, sign-in state, location and model version.

How to read your results

With 3 questions, your result is a snapshot, not a ranking. "Mentioned in 1 of 3 answers" means exactly that: one of the answers we generated named you.

  • Not mentioned anywhere is common for smaller or newer businesses. It usually means AI search doesn't yet connect your business with the questions customers ask.
  • Mentioned but not recommended means AI knows you exist but prefers to recommend others for that question. Look at what the recommended businesses have that you don't state clearly.
  • Cited as a source only means your website was used as evidence, but your brand wasn't named in the answer text.
  • Competitors show who currently "owns" the answer. Checking how they describe themselves, and where they're listed, is often the fastest way to find gaps.
  • Sources show which websites shaped the answer. Being listed, reviewed or mentioned on those sites makes it more likely AI will mention you.

AI answers vary between runs. A single check is a snapshot — to see whether things are improving you need the same questions checked repeatedly, which is what monitoring is for.

How to improve your AI visibility

Your report's recommendations are based only on what was measured for your site. The patterns behind them are consistent:

  1. Say plainly on your website what you offer, who it's for and where — in the words customers use in their questions.
  2. Get listed and described accurately on the third-party sites AI cites for your category (directories, review sites, comparison articles).
  3. Publish pages that directly answer common customer questions, so your site can be cited as a source.
  4. Make sure AI crawlers can read your site. Our robots.txt AI checker shows which crawlers you allow or block.
  5. Track the same questions over time to see whether changes work. How to track AI visibility explains a simple method.

Free check vs ongoing monitoring

The checker is a one-off report: 3 questions on ChatGPT. Monitoring keeps your questions under watch — up to 10 questions on ChatGPT and Perplexity, re-checked every 7 days, with history, competitor changes and source trends. Pro is launching soon.

Engine-specific tracking is explained on the ChatGPT rank tracker and Perplexity rank tracker pages.

Frequently asked questions

Is the AI visibility checker really free?

+

Yes. The report needs no account and no credit card. To keep it free for everyone, there's a limit on how many checks can be run per day, and the same website gets at most one new check every 24 hours — a recent report is reused instead.

Do you use my brand name in the questions?

+

No. The questions are written the way a customer would ask, without your brand name, so the result shows whether AI brings you up on its own.

Why only 3 questions?

+

3 questions give a quick, real snapshot at no cost to you. Monitoring tracks up to 10 questions you choose and repeats them over time.

Is this the same as asking ChatGPT myself?

+

Close, but not identical. We use the official API with live web search and ask each question exactly as a customer would. Your own ChatGPT app can answer differently because of memory, personalisation, location and model version.

Do you give my site an AI visibility score?

+

No made-up score. You see real counts — for example, mentioned in 1 of 3 answers — plus the answers themselves, so you can judge what the numbers mean.

What if my website blocks bots?

+

We try to identify your business with a web search instead. If there still isn't enough public information, the report tells you rather than inventing a profile.
