How to Appear in Google AI Overviews
By YourAIRank Team · Published · Updated
Short answer
To show up in Google AI Overviews, your page has to be indexed, eligible to show a snippet, and give the clearest answer to the search — there's no separate submission or special markup. Google says those are the only technical requirements; beyond that, the things that make a page a good search result apply. In practice: make sure the page is indexed and not restricted by nosnippet, answer the specific question clearly and early, cover the follow-up questions people have, add first-hand detail and evidence, and first check which of your searches actually show an AI Overview.
How to show up in AI Overviews
You show up in AI Overviews by being one of the pages Google uses to write the Overview for that search — so the work is on the page, not in a settings panel. In order:
- Find out which of your searches show an AI Overview at all.
- Make sure the page is indexed and not restricted by snippet controls.
- Answer the question in the first lines under a heading that mirrors it.
- Cover the follow-up questions and add first-hand detail other pages lack.
- Re-check the Overview after each change.
Each step is explained below. To see whether it's working, the Google AI Overview tracker records whether the Overview names you and links your page.
Start with the searches that show an AI Overview
Not every search gets an AI Overview, and it varies by topic and location. Before rewriting anything, find out which of your important searches show one and which sources they link. The Google AI visibility checker does this for searches generated from your site.
Step 1: Be indexed and snippet-eligible
- Check the page with Search Console's URL Inspection: it has to be indexed.
- Don't restrict snippets:
nosnippet, a very lowmax-snippetordata-nosnippeton the main content limit how Google can use the page in AI features too. - Google-Extended is not a switch for AI Overviews — it controls use for Gemini models, not appearance in Search.
Step 2: Answer the question on the page
AI Overviews summarise. Pages that state the answer plainly — near the top, in a sentence or two, with the specifics — are easier to use than pages that circle the topic. Use a heading that mirrors the question and answer it immediately beneath.

Step 3: Cover the follow-up questions
An Overview often answers the next questions too: cost, time, alternatives, risks. A page that covers those in clearly separated sections gives Google more to draw on than one that answers only the head question.
Step 4: Add something other pages don't have
When ten pages say the same thing, there's little reason to link yours. First-hand experience, your own data, real prices, local detail and clear authorship give the page a reason to be the source.
Step 5: For local businesses, keep facts consistent
For local searches, the facts Google shows about a business — name, address, hours, services — should match across your site and your listings. Inconsistencies make it harder to name you confidently.
Step 6: Measure the Overviews, not just rankings
Search Console blends AI feature traffic into its overall figures, so it won't tell you whether you're linked in an Overview. Track the Overviews directly: the Google AI Overviews citation tracker records which sources are linked; the Google AI Overview tracker records whether your brand is named.
What not to do
- Don't look for AI-Overview-specific markup — there isn't any.
- Don't mass-produce near-identical pages for every variation of a question; Google treats scaled low-value content as spam.
- Don't hide text for crawlers. What Google can use is what visitors can see.

No. It can help Google understand the page, but it's not a requirement. See structured data for AI search.
Can I keep my site out of AI Overviews?

You can limit snippets with nosnippet or max-snippet, which also limits use in AI features — at the cost of how your page appears in regular results too.
