AI Overview citation tracking

Track the Sources Cited in Google AI Overviews

AI Overviews come with source links — the cards and inline links pointing to the pages Google drew on. Those links sit above the regular results, and they don't always go to the pages ranking first. Citation tracking records which sites get them for your searches, and whether yours is one.

AI Overview citations aren't organic rankings

A page can be linked in an AI Overview without ranking first, and the top organic result can be left out of the Overview entirely. So your rank tracker can show you at position one while the AI answer above it sends readers elsewhere. The two need to be measured separately.

What the tracker records

  • Whether an AI Overview was shown for each search — if not, it's labelled "No AI Overview shown" and kept out of your figures.
  • Every linked source in the Overview, flagged as your site, a competitor's or a third party's.
  • Whether your brand is named in the Overview text — separately from whether your page is linked.
  • Changes between checks — which sources appeared or disappeared.

Patterns worth looking for

  • The same publishers or forums linked across many of your searches — they define how Google's AI sees your topic.
  • Your page linked for one search but not for a closely related one — usually a sign the page answers one question well and the other vaguely.
  • Competitor pages that keep being linked — note what type of page they are: guides, price pages, comparisons.
  • Searches that started or stopped showing an AI Overview.

Earning more AI Overview citations

The pages Google links are the ones that answer the question directly, cover its follow-ups and add something specific. The step-by-step version is in how to appear in Google AI Overviews; markup questions are covered in structured data for AI search.

Location and language matter

AI Overviews differ by location and language. Each search is run for your business's city or country (the United States when neither is known), in your language, on desktop, so the sources reflect what your customers would see.

How YourAIRank tracks AI Overview sources

Results come from Google's real results page through DataForSEO's SERP API. Pro tracks up to 10 searches every 7 days and shows the sources linked most often; the Google AI Overview tracker covers brand mentions on the same answers. Pro isn't available to buy yet — the free check works today.

Frequently asked questions

Are AI Overview clicks shown in Search Console?

+

Google includes clicks and impressions from its AI features in the overall Search Console performance figures rather than reporting them as a separate type. To know which pages are linked, you need to look at the Overviews themselves.

Why does the AI Overview disappear for some searches?

+

Google decides per search whether to show one, and that decision can change over time. Tracking records both cases.

How is this different from ChatGPT citation tracking?

+

The idea is the same — which pages are used as sources — but the source pool differs. See the ChatGPT citation tracker.
