Structured Data for AI Search
By YourAIRank Team · Published
Short answer
Structured data won't get you into AI answers on its own — Google says no special markup is needed for its AI features, and other assistants don't publish how they use it. What it does do is state facts unambiguously: who you are, where you are, what you sell and what it costs. That helps any system that reads your pages, as long as the markup matches what's visible on the page. Start with Organization or LocalBusiness, then add Product, Service or Article where they fit.
What structured data is
Structured data is a machine-readable description of a page, usually written as JSON-LD using the schema.org vocabulary. Instead of inferring from the text that "Open Mon–Fri, 8–6" are opening hours, a parser reads openingHours directly.
Minimal LocalBusiness markup (fictional bakery)
- { "@context": "https://schema.org", "@type": "Bakery",
- "name": "Hafen Bäckerei", "url": "https://example.com",
- "address": { "@type": "PostalAddress", "addressLocality": "Hamburg" },
- "openingHours": "Mo-Sa 07:00-18:00" }
What it can and can't do for AI search
| It can | It can't |
|---|---|
| State your name, category, location and contact details unambiguously | Make an assistant recommend you |
| Connect your site to your official profiles (sameAs) | Make up for a page that doesn't answer the question |
| Describe products, prices and availability precisely | Replace independent mentions and reviews |
| Help search engines show rich results where eligible | Unlock a special AI placement — none exists |
Google states that there's no special markup for its AI features — AI Overviews and AI Mode included. Pages need to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet.
What that means in practice: how to appear in Google AI Overviews; whether it works shows up in a Google AI Overview tracker.
The schema types that matter most
| Type | Use it for | Key properties |
|---|---|---|
| Organization | Every business — usually on the homepage | name, url, logo, sameAs, contactPoint |
| LocalBusiness (or a subtype) | Businesses with a location customers visit | address, geo, openingHours, telephone, areaServed |
| Product + Offer | Product pages | name, brand, price, priceCurrency, availability |
| Service | Service pages | serviceType, provider, areaServed |
| Article | Guides and blog posts | headline, author, datePublished, dateModified |
| FAQPage | Pages with a visible FAQ | Question, acceptedAnswer |
Google only shows FAQ rich results for a small set of authoritative government and health sites. FAQPage markup is still valid elsewhere — just don't expect a visual change in Google.
sameAs: connecting your identity
The sameAs property lists your official profiles — social accounts, business listings, a Wikipedia or Wikidata entry if you have one. It tells parsers those pages describe the same entity as your site, which helps when your name is shared with other businesses. List only profiles you actually control or that describe you.
Rules that keep markup trustworthy
- Match the visible page. Markup that states prices, reviews or hours the page doesn't show breaks Google's guidelines.
- Keep it current. Outdated markup spreads outdated facts — a common source of wrong information in AI answers.
- Don't mark up reviews of yourself on your own site as if they were independent ratings.
- Be specific. Use the most precise type that fits (Dentist rather than LocalBusiness).
Checking your markup
Validate syntax with the Schema Markup Validator and Google eligibility with the Rich Results Test. The AI readiness checker shows whether your page has structured data at all, alongside the other signals AI search relies on: crawler access, indexability, sitemap and metadata.
Frequently asked questions
Does ChatGPT read schema markup?
+
OpenAI doesn't publish how ChatGPT uses structured data. Treat it as a clarity aid that may help, not as a lever with a known effect.
Is llms.txt a kind of structured data?
+
No. llms.txt is a plain Markdown file that summarises your site; it's a separate, optional convention. The llms.txt generator drafts one if you want it.
Which type should a small business add first?
+
Organization on the homepage, or LocalBusiness (with the most specific subtype) if customers visit you. Then Product or Service on the pages that sell.
