AI Share of Voice

By YourAIRank Team · Published

Short answer

AI share of voice is the share of AI answers — across a fixed set of customer questions and platforms — that name your brand, compared with how often they name each competitor. It's useful because single answers vary: a share measured across many questions and repeated checks shows who AI assistants really favour in your category. Keep the questions unbranded, the conditions constant, and compare periods rather than individual answers.

What AI share of voice measures

Classic share of voice compares your presence with competitors' — in ads, search results or press. In AI search, the unit is the answer: for the questions your customers ask, how often is each brand named?

Worked example · fictional numbers

  • 10 questions × 2 platforms × 2 checks = 40 answers
  • Your brand named in 12 answers → 30% share of voice
  • Competitor A named in 22 answers → 55%
  • Competitor B named in 8 answers → 20%
  • (Shares can add up to more than 100%: one answer can name several brands.)

Choosing the question set

  • Unbranded — questions that name your brand will always mention you and inflate the number.
  • Representative — a mix of category, comparison, problem and local questions, weighted towards the ones that bring customers.
  • Stable — keep the same set between periods; changing questions changes the baseline.
  • Big enough — a handful of questions swings wildly; more questions and repeated checks give a steadier figure.

Not all mentions are equal

A raw count treats "we recommend X" and "X is another option, but expensive" the same. Read share of voice alongside:

  • Recommendation rate — the share of answers where you're actually recommended, not just named.
  • Position — when answers list options, how often you're listed first.
  • Citation share — how often your pages are the linked sources, not just your name in the text.

Measure per platform, not only blended

A blended figure can hide that you dominate one assistant and are absent from another. Report share of voice per platform first, then the total. The reasons platforms differ are covered in Perplexity vs ChatGPT visibility.

Pitfalls that make the number meaningless

  • Counting directories, review sites and publishers as competitors.
  • Comparing one check with another without repeating either — answers vary from run to run (see why ChatGPT gives different answers).
  • Mixing questions from different markets or languages into one figure.
  • Counting a brand's sub-products as separate competitors.

Tracking share of voice with YourAIRank

YourAIRank gives you the two numbers share of voice is built from: your mention rate per check, and how often each competitor is named across the same answers. Competitors are only counted when they're named in the answer as real alternatives, and a brand's own products count once. Pro tracks up to 10 questions on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews every 7 days; see ChatGPT competitor tracking for the competitor view.

Frequently asked questions

What's a good AI share of voice?

+

There's no universal benchmark — it depends on how many credible options exist in your category. The useful comparison is with your named competitors and with your own previous periods.

How often should I measure it?

+

Often enough to have repeated checks in every period you compare. Monthly reporting on weekly checks works for most businesses.

Is share of voice the same as AI visibility?

+

It's one way to summarise it. AI visibility covers more: what's said about you, which sources are cited, and how that changes. See how to track AI visibility.
